Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical family on August 9th, 1963. She was born in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel superstar Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singing star Dionne Warwick. As a child, she sang in her New Hope Baptist Church Choir in Newark. When she was fifteen, Houston was singing professionally backing vocals with her mother for Chaka Khan's hit song in 1978 Im Every Woman. In the following years, she was a background vocals for Lou Rawls & Jermaine jackson as well as her mom. Her vocals with the New York-based band Material brought attention to major record labels which included Arista. They signed her with Arista in 1983 where she spent the remainder of her professional career. The debut Whitney Houston album was released in 1985. It was one of the best-selling albums of an artist. It featured a number of hits like How Will I Know You Give Good Love Saving All My Love For you and The Greatest Love of All. It allowed her to achieve seven US chart-topping songs in succession and was more than the Beatles. The album was sold out of 3 million copies during its initial year in the US and went on to make 25 million copies worldwide, earning them the first six Grammies. Its Whitney 1987 record, with The album's tracks, such as Where Do Broken Hearts and I Wanna Dance With Somebody as hits, helped build upon her success. However, the 1992 movie The Bodyguard sealed her spot in the top 20 most-sellers in history. While the film wasn't very well received, nor did her performance, the soundtrack to the film's Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You reached the top spot on both the albums and singles charts in America for months. The album sold over 44 million copies. Her daughter Bobbi is born the month of March in 1993. This was the year after she wed Bobby Brown. In the same year her use of drugs was well-documented and she started using it daily until 1996.
